The Constitution of Algorithms: Ground-Truthing, Programming, Formulating (Florian Jaton)

The technologies we use every day are powered by algorithms, which are sometimes used interchangeably with words like "big data," "machine learning," and "artificial intelligence." Arguments concerning the real or potential effects of new algorithms are common.

In this open-access book, the author proposes a novel approach to the study of computerized methods, giving an account of how and from where algorithms are derived, looking at the practical processes by which algorithms are gradually assembled as opposed to what they may suggest or demand once assembled.

Jaton sheds light on the unseen procedures that underlie the creation of algorithms by using data from a four-year ethnographic investigation of a computer science lab with a focus on digital image processing.

A thought-provoking and expertly-written analysis of how algorithms enter the world and inexorably change it. Jaton pulls off the risky deed of providing an empirically thorough examination of algorithms without assuming anything about them.
