The Coming Swarm: DDOS Actions, Hacktivism, and Civil Disobedience on the Internet (Molly Sauter)

Rising star Molly Sauter explores the theory, history, and practice of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks as a form of political activism in her book The Coming Swarm.

The internet is a crucial platform for managing interpersonal relationships, communicating, and expressing oneself. Many will use the internet as a theater when there is a message to spread, words to spread or people to unite.

Is there room for the disruption and civil disobedience tactics that are just as well-known in the world of street marches, occupations, and sit-ins? As well-known and widely accepted activist tools—petitions, fundraisers, mass letter-writing, call-in campaigns, and others—find equivalent practices in the online space. The Coming Swarm uses activist DDOS actions as the basis for a comprehensive analysis of the practice of disruptive civil disobedience on the internet, with an emphasis on early deployments of activist DDOS as well as recent cases to trace its growth over time.
