SurviveJS - Webpack: From Apprentice to Master (Juho Vepsalainen)

Webpack is a potent bundling tool that has gained popularity in part due to the popularity of Facebook's React. Assets are taken in by Webpack, a bundler, who then converts them into browser-friendly forms.

It just so happens to work well. Due to its configuration-driven approach, it isn't the simplest tool to use, but it is still worthwhile to study. Reading this book will teach you how to:

  • Set up a Webpack-based development and production environment. You can find the configuration online as well.
  • Understand Webpack's Hot Module Replacement (HMR) and how to configure it in various ways.
  • Learn to deal with styling with Webpack. This includes hashing and extracting styles to separate files.
  • Load different types of assets and even implement loaders of your own in a test-driven manner.
  • Learn to load dependencies dynamically while your application or site is running.
  • Learn to configure React-specific setup in an effective manner.

You must be familiar with the fundamentals of JavaScript and the use of npm in order to read this book.

Online, the book's contents are available for free. You can help this book's creation by buying it. Tobias Koppers, the creator of Webpack, receives a portion (around 30%) of the revenue. This aids in his continued tool development. Details can be found on the book's homepage.
