SQL: A Comparative Survey (Hugh Darwen)

Hugh Darwen's An Introduction to Relational Database Theory and SQL: A Comparative Survey are two books that should be studied side by side for the best results.

It demonstrates how the examples in that book's theory can be written in SQL by closely mimicking its format. Thus, the several ways in which SQL departs from relational database theory are revealed, and their effects are addressed. The book offers a wealth of Historical Notes that demonstrate how SQL has developed since its inception in the 1970s, drawing on the author's extensive experience as a member of the group responsible for producing the ISO SQL standard.
