Spatial Thinking in Planning Practice: An Introduction to GIS (Yiping Fang, et al)

With the aid of this textbook, students will learn how to use software, manage databases, and do research by gathering information, analyzing it, and presenting their findings.

It underlines the requirement to look into the viability and potential of GIS technologies in a typical planning scenario and assess their prospective uses. We believe that these readings will give us the background we need to decide whether or not GIS is appropriate for a given planning application. GIS may not be required (or useful) for every planning application.

In order to promote spatial thinking, this textbook emphasizes open-ended planning problems that call for judgment and inquiry while also building the analytical skills necessary to comprehend a range of local and regional planning issues.

This book gives readers the knowledge they need to grasp how GIS ideas relate to urban and regional planning, but it works best in conjunction with a hands-on tutorial that enables readers to gain a thorough understanding of the specific planning applications of GIS.

The chapters in this textbook were either written by the editors using materials from Creative Commons or they were linked to a scanned copy of a book chapter in the library reserve. We have included a number of discussion points and contextual applications through a few site links at the end of each chapter.
