Extraction of data from a geometric model is known as shape interrogation. It is a crucial element of CAD/CAM systems, which use computers to assist in design and manufacturing.

The topics of geometric modelling and solid modelling are connected by this book. The entire book is centred on the overarching idea of recasting all shape interrogation problems to the solution of a nonlinear system, aside from the differential geometry subjects discussed.

There are algorithms for nonlinear polynomial solvers, intersection problems, differential geometry of intersection curves, distance functions, curve and surface interrogation, umbilics and lines of curvature, and geodesics, in addition to the mathematical foundations for various shape interrogation techniques.

The authors' main area of interest is shape interrogation of geometric models with free-form surface boundaries. Free-form surfaces, also known as sculptured surfaces, are frequently utilised in the bodies of ships, cars, and aeroplanes since they need to be both practical and have aesthetically pleasing shapes. Aesthetic shapes with free-form surfaces are used in the design of many consumer goods and electrical equipment.
