Performance Tuning with SQL Server Dynamic Management Views (Louis Davidson, et al)

Dynamic Management Views (DMVs), which reveal previously hidden information on the background activities of your database sessions and transactions, are a substantial and valuable addition to the DBA's troubleshooting toolkit.

So why don't all DBAs use them? Why do many DBAs still choose to disregard them in favor of "tried and true" tools like sp who2, DBCC OPENTRAN, and others, or settle for the "ready created" reports included in SSMS? Why do people who really utilize DMVs still talk longingly about "good old sys processes"? Two key elements appear to be at play. First off, some DBAs are oblivious to the breadth and complexity of information accessible from the DMvs or how it may assist them in resolving frequent problems.

This book examines all the DMVs that the DBA finds most frequently helpful when examining query execution, index utilization, session and transaction activity, disc IO, and how SQL Server is making use of or misusing the operating system. Second, DMVs are known for being challenging to utilize. Sysprocesses have been de-normalized, and numerous new views and columns have been introduced in an effort to provide as many valuable data as possible. Given this fact and the first perplexing decisions on which columns would be accessible, several DBAs have compared querying DMVs to "gathering mystic spells." In actuality, though, you'll notice the same methods and comparable join patterns being utilized repeatedly once you start writing your own scripts. Because of this, a relatively modest core set of scripts may easily be modified to meet any need. The goal of this book is to demystify the procedure for gathering the data you need to troubleshoot SQL Server issues.
