Math in Society: A Survey of Mathematics for the Liberal Arts Major (David Lippman)

This book is an overview of modern mathematical concepts, the majority of which are non-algebraic and suitable for a college-level course on quantitative literacy for liberal arts majors.

The majority of the chapters in the book are independently written, allowing the instructor to pick and choose which topics to cover.

The usefulness of the mathematics is emphasised. The main text covers the essential information for each topic, and exploratory exercises suitable for in-class, group, or solo research provide more detail.

About the Authors
David Lippman has been an instructor at Pierce College in Lakewood, Washington, since the fall of 2000. He holds a master's degree in mathematics from Western Washington University. David has always been a supporter of open education, free resources, and essentially any proposal that helps lower the price of education for students. In addition, David is a coauthor of the open-access textbook Precalculus: An Investigation of Functions, which covers collegiate algebra and trigonometry.
