Identity Management on a Shoestring (Ganesh Prasad, et al.)

This article is intended for security and IT professionals working for end-user organizations that are in charge of setting up an enterprise-wide Identity and Access Management (IAM) system, particularly architects.

It is neither an in-depth technical guide for a specific product nor a conceptual discussion of identity (for which we would recommend the reader see Kim Cameron's great work on the Laws of Identity). Based on the author's experience, it presents a practical and economical architectural method for deploying IAM within an organization.

Although Java shops would likely benefit the most from our recommendations given our expertise and experience, we are certain that these general concepts may be applied to other technological platforms. The typical disclaimers are applicable, as they are for any unwanted counsel. There are no expressed or implied promises or warranties. When creating a solution based on this methodology, the reader is required to use common sense and solid design judgment.
