Mid-to-late 1990s saw the beginning of grid research, which has its roots in distributed and high-performance computing.

The Grid's significance was quickly recognized by national and international research and development authorities, who accorded it a top priority on their research and development agenda. The Grid has developed from solving data and computationally hard problems to tackling large-scale scientific initiatives, tying together enterprises along the supply chain, and becoming a World Wide Grid interwoven into our daily routine activities.

This book describes the enormous potential, ongoing strength, and extensive global adoption of Grid computing. It provides an overview of recent developments in the subject and chronicles the development of particular Grid applications. In 2002, Dr. Soha Maad earned her Ph.D. from Warwick University in the UK. She has years of experience supervising research projects at numerous universities, including the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, Fraunhofer Institute of Media Communication in Germany, INRIA in France, Trinity College in Dublin, and University College Cork in Ireland.
