The fundamentals of using finite difference techniques to solve partial differential equations are covered in this straightforward book.

This book was written for practitioners, in contrast to many of the more established academic works on the subject. The development of finite difference schemes, formulation and implementation of algorithms, verification of implementations, analyses of physical behavior as implied by the numerical solutions, and the use of the techniques and software to address issues in the fields of physics and biology are thus specifically covered.

About the Authors
  • The professor of computer science at the University of Oslo is Hans Petter Langtangen. He was originally a mechanics professor and is currently the director of Simula Research Laboratory's "Center for Biomedical Computing," a Norwegian Center of Excellence.
  • Svein Linge holds a doctorate in science in biomechanics from the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences and is a professor of modeling and simulation at the University College of Southeast Norway.
