These group systems have developed through natural selection to have impressive problem-solving abilities despite operating in a complicated, dynamic environment. Employing simple yet versatile parallel cellular models, coupled with evolutionary computation techniques, this volume explores the issue of constructing man-made systems that exhibit characteristics such as those manifested by their natural counterparts.

Parallel cellular machines have the potential to be used both practically to build novel systems with the properties of evolution, reproduction, regenerative growth, and learning as well as scientifically as vehicles for studying phenomena of interest in fields like complex adaptive systems and artificial life. This stand-alone book explores the operation of such machines, the sophisticated computation they display, and the use of artificial evolution to develop such systems.

Computer science professor Moshe Sipper does research in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and evolutionary computation. He wrote four pieces of fiction—Fredric: A Collection of Flash Fiction, Daniel Max and the King in the Tower, Xor: The Shape of Darkness, and The Peaceful Affair—along with an anthology.
