Essential CVS (Jennifer Vesperman)

This simple guide demonstrates how to use CVS, an open-source program that helps you maintain versions of anything saved in files, for a variety of professionals.

This updated edition has been enlarged to clarify common CVS usages for system administrators, project managers, software architects, user-interface (UI) specialists, graphic designers, and others. It is ideal for software developers to monitor different versions of the same code.

Essential CVS, the 2nd Edition, up to date for version 1.12, provides a summary of CVS, clarifies its fundamental ideas, and lists the most used commands. The book's Quickstart Guide demonstrates how to create and operate a straightforward CVS repository using the default settings and the barest minimum of extras for individuals who need to get up to speed quickly. Also present are:

  • A full command reference that details all aspects of customizing CVS for automation, logging, branching, merging documents, and creating alerts
  • Examples and descriptions of the most commonly used options for each command
  • Why and when to tag or branch your project, tagging before releases, and using branching to create a bugfix version of a project
  • Details on the systems used in CVS to permit multiple developers to work on the same project without loss of data
