This ground-breaking book does an excellent job of presenting computer programming as a single subject that is both useful and scientifically sound. The book concentrates on strategies of enduring significance and carefully explains them in terms of a straightforward abstract machine.

The book offers all significant programming paradigms in a unified framework that demonstrates their intricate connections and demonstrates when and how to utilize them in tandem.

The book begins with a primer on programming basics before presenting both well-known and obscure computation models ("programming paradigms"). Each model has a unique collection of techniques, and each is chosen for inclusion based on how useful it is in actual use. Declarative concurrency, message-passing concurrency, explicit state, object-oriented programming, shared-state concurrency, and relational programming are some of the common paradigms. Programming for graphical user interfaces, distributed programming, and constraint programming are examples of specialized models. Each model is built on its own kernel language, which is a basic core language with just a few key components for programmers.
