An Introduction to Statistical Signal Processing (Robert M. Gray, et al)

The fundamental methods and tools of statistical signal processing are covered in this book. Theoretical concepts are connected to specific communications and signal processing applications at every stage.

The book begins with an explanation of fundamental probability, random objects, expectation, and second-order moment theory. Thereafter, numerous examples of the most well-known random process models are given, together with an explanation of their fundamental applications and attributes. The book is sprinkled with specific applications to the communication, estimation, detection, modulation, and other signal processing systems as well as the study of random signals.

The material is easily related to undergraduate courses on basic probability and linear systems because the authors are cautious not to assume prior knowledge of probability theory or even measure theory. Following the principle of linear development of material, the text itself is carved in a sequential and ornate style. The text includes instructive explorations of notions and fundamental concepts, putting an emphasis on intuitive reasons. There is a tonne of suggested issue questions.

About the Authors
  • Robert M. Gray is a professor and vice chair of electrical engineering at Stanford University. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. In addition to information theory, he has produced more than 200 scholarly publications on applied probability, signal processing, voice and picture coding, ergodic theory, and the theory of Toeplitz matrices. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the IEEE.
  • Lee D. Davisson, an Emeritus Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University. He has written more than one hundred scientific papers and three books, either alone or with others. He holds IEEE Fellow status.
