The study of algorithmic algebra focuses on some of the key computational algebraic tools, including Gröbner bases, characteristic sets, resultants, and semialgebraic sets.

The primary goal of the book is to familiarize advanced undergraduate and graduate computer science, engineering, and mathematics students with the algorithmic concepts in computer algebra so they can conduct research in computational algebra or comprehend the algorithms underlying many common symbolic computational systems, such as Mathematica, Maple, or Axiom. Additionally, given that symbolic algebraic approaches have started to play a significant role in these fields, researchers in robotics, solid modeling, computational geometry, and automated theorem-proving communities may find it valuable.

Despite being self-contained, the book is written at a high level and goes into enough detail about the subject. Students studying computer science who have never taken algebra can still read the book. On the other hand, some math readers might find it intriguing to observe how algorithmic structures have been applied to offer new proofs for some traditional theorems. The book is perfect as a textbook or for self-study because it also includes many exercises and solutions to a few of them.
