A Primer for Computational Biology (Shawn T. O'Neil)

Anyone who needs to grasp the fundamentals of bioinformatics, the application of computer techniques to a deeper comprehension of biological systems, should pick up this book.

It seeks to offer the abilities required for study in a world with lots of data. The manual discusses creating programs and pipelines for data analysis, accessing and using remote servers via the command line, and gives helpful vocabulary for multidisciplinary work.

The book is broken into three parts:

  1. Introduction to Unix/Linux: The command line is the "natural environment" of scientific computing.
  2. Programming in Python: Python is both a premier language for learning and a common choice in scientific software development.
  3. Programming in R: The R language specializes in statistical data analysis, and is also quite useful for visualizing large datasets.
